Dracut students complete holiday mission for troops By JENNIFER AMY MYERS, Sun Staff Lowell Sun Article Last Updated: DRACUT -- Students from four Dracut schools helped to make Christmas a little brighter this year for U.S. troops stationed around the world. More than 22,000 gifts including T-shirts, books, games, footballs and phone cards were collected by students in more than 20 schools throughout the Merrimack Valley including Dracut High School, Lakeview Junior High School, Englesby Intermediate School and Brookside Elementary School. Combined into more than 10,000 gift sets, the loot was shipped to soldiers stationed in Iraq, Afghanistan, Kosovo, Korea, Japan and Africa. Additionally, more than 7,000 handmade cards and posters will be sent to the soldiers. The drive is the largest yet sponsored by New England Caring for the Military, an organization founded in 2004 by James Sereigo-Wareing of Methuen, to express his appreciation of and support for the military. "I was astounded by the amount of stuff that was collected," he said. "I cannot put it into words. What we've sent doesn't even include the half-ton of hygiene products and canned goods in my basement. "The kids at Dracut High School collected about 600 gifts, that's a lot for one school," Sereigo-Wareing added. For more information about New England Caring for the Military, visit www.necfom.org.
