FOR RELEASE: Dec. 18, 2006 New England Caring for our Military concluded its largest troop drive with 11 cities throughout the Merrimack Valley Region of Massachusetts and New Hampshire participating. The gift drive, dubbed ‘It Takes a Valley,’ ended Dec. 4 and netted more than 22,000 gifts from kindergarteners through high school students. Approximately 6,000 students from 20 schools throughout the valley collected items to send to the troops from a list provided by New England Caring for our Military. Those items included socks, t-shirts, board games, puzzles, cards, books, footballs, horse shoe sets, telephone cards. These gifts are sure to help pass the time for our deployed men and women serving overseas. The 22,000 items were packaged to make more than 10,000 individual gift sets sent to units as well as entire platoons in Iraq, Afghanistan, Kosovo, Korea, Japan, and Africa. New England Caring for our Military initiated the gift drive in early November hoping to help boost the morale of servicemembers who won’t be home for the holidays. In addition to the gifts, students also made 7,000 holiday greeting cards and posters, which are sure to be a hit with the servicemembers away from their friends and family. James Sereigo-Wareing, director and founder of New England Caring for our Military, believes the handmade greetings from the students will go a long way to boost morale and reinforce to our men and women serving that we support them and honor their dedication and service. Some children drew pictures as well. These are sure to be a morale booster, especially with all the praise these students included in their greetings for our servicemembers, he added.
